Juan Cuzcatlan, born Juan Carlos Bojorquez-Corleto, was born in El Salvador on December 23, 1979. During these tumultuous times there were rumors that a revolution was going to explode into an all out war at any moment. This December is referred to by all Salvadorians as Black December. Worried for their family’s safety, Juan’s parents decided to leave the hospital only hours after his delivery. Sure enough, the country exploded into a bloody civil war in 1980.
Juan Cuzcatlan’s parents owned a distribution business that would cater to all of El Salvador with food such as cereal. In 1985, the family received death threats especially towards the children demanding money. Juan’s father worried for his family’s well being. He finally decided that he could no longer protect and raise his family in El Salvador. December 23, 1985, the family immigrated to the United States. Their new home was Los Angeles, California. The first couple of years the family struggled to survive economically. Juan’s mother worked cleaning houses while his father took a low paying job as a deliveryman. The family lived in a camper that was given to them by a relative who had immigrated eight years earlier. Little by little his father earned a reputation of being a great salesman to the point were the distributors of Cup-a-Noodles gave his father credit to their product. Their situation improved that they were able to rent an apartment in Cudahy, California. This became their home and eventually the family bought a house and opened a business. This is the city where Juan Cuzcatlan grew up.
Growing up in the tough streets of Cudahy, Juan Cuzcatlan learned and experienced how cruel life is by growing up in a city only 20 minutes away from the violence of Los Angeles that spills over to Cudahy. Juan lost a couple of friends to gang violence and had several relatives be a target of that same violence. After these experiences, Juan knew he did not want to be part of a gang life style. His music influences ranged from Rage Against the Machine, El General, 2Pac, Biggie, Control Machete, and Molotov to traditional music from El Salvador like cumbias from Josie y su Grupo Lora and Los Hermanos Flores. He immediately fell in love with music. Another major influence was in the form of literature by Roque Dalton’s “El Salvador: Monografia.” This book helped him understand his heritage and the social and political problems that his country was facing.
In addition, he criticized the involvement of the United States in Latin American countries and the problems it caused. His fascination for the author led him to be proud of his culture to the point were he was punished for taking part in a walk out in his high school were he protested against anti-immigrant propositions like 187 and 209. His parents would often try to convince him not to talk about his radical political views due to fears of their very own past. He started reading more books about his country’s history becoming very interested at a young age. So much was his fascination that his uncle nicknamed him Juan Cuzcatlan. Cuzcatlan is an indigenous name for what is now known as El Salvador. The nickname stuck.
In 1999, along with his friend Jesus Menchaca he recorded his first two demos Maldito Dinero and Ven Ven. Fast becoming a hit among his family and friends. Winning his father over with his talent to the point that he started financing his music. He became friends with a group of rappers called Live Radio who was produced by Tha Overlord who also produced some tight beats for Juan Cuzcatlan. Unfortunately in 2001, Juan Cuzcatlan’s father past away which created a void in his life. Losing his inspiration, not much is known what happened to Juan between 2001 and 2005. One day 2006, while dining in a popular Salvadorian restaurant called “El Baron” a young rapper by the name of Galeano approached Juan Cuzcatlan outside the restaurant trying to sell him a CD. Galeano asked him to support the Salvadorian hip-hop movement with a ten-dollar donation. During this conversation with Galeano, Juan Cuzcatlan mentioned he was also a rapper as well. This prompted Galeano to offer his studio for a recording session. They exchanged numbers and set a date to record.
When the day came, Juan Cuzcatlan’s lyrics seemed to impress Galeano. He mentioned that his style possessed a certain uniqueness and there was a definite market for it. As they recorded, a fellow rapper by the name of Rob West visited the studio. He was also impressed by the lyrics to the point where he jumped on the track. Juan Cuzcatlan and Rob West hit it off fast becoming good friends. Today Rob West has become Juan Cuzcatlan producer and advisor recording a hit demo song called Maldita Traisionera. The demo was uploaded to youtube.com and has already reached over 5,000 hits in less then a month. His much anticipated debut album is set to be released and distributed by Yomando Records some time in 2008. His provocative lyrics and political views gained Juan Cuzcatlan respect and admiration from fellow rappers to the point where he regularly records At Yo Mando Records. The Yo Mando family, headed by CEO Robert Hernandez, consists of talent like Sammy Cultura, ROBWEST, Lady D, Nexter, Blaze 1, Oo-go, Phuska and other gifted rappers. Juan Cuzcatlan is currently working on various projects including his debut album LA OFENSIVA FINAL, Yomando Records Mix Tape.
